Since mid-December my inbox (and my postman delivered junk mail) has been littered with get slim quick miracle products and the latest fads. The “health” market must cost consumers a devastating amount during the first quarter of the year especially which is sad considering the promises that are made rarely pay off.
I myself have been on a diet since I was eighteen, for medical reasons weight loss does not come easily to me and so I too have been enticed into wonder-cures and quick-fixes in the past too. What I have come to realise is that losing weight and becoming fitter is not about fad diets, it is about embarking on a new lifestyle and making positive and informed choices.
Exercise and diet go hand in hand when it comes to building an altogether healthier body. For those who enjoy exercise and have a regime in place the next step for many is often to look at natural health supplements. Despite popular belief sports nutrition and health supplements are not simply for those wanting to look like a body builder.
Fat burners for example are a well-known and much used product for those looking to be leaner as part of their health and fitness goals. Fat burners will not however melt away fat as you sit on the sofa and eat crisps (sorry!). The way these supplements work is to help you shed excess fat as part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle, incorporating a healthy approach to eating and increased activity.
The fat burners work to increase your metabolic rate. This is basically the rate at which our bodies burn up calories. If you are consuming more calories than your body needs and aren’t working any excess off then no, fat burners aren’t for you however for those serious about changing their habits and the way they look (and feel) this is one example of a nutritional supplement which will give you the boost you need.
Supplements are not wonder cures or magic potions; they are a boost to give you the extra power you need to meet your health and fitness goals quicker than you would without them.
Anyone who knows me personally knows that I have the clean eating and healthy approach down to a fine art however couldn’t run if my bum was on fire. I walk miles each week and for me this ticks my exercise quota. I do know however that if I wanted to speed up reaching my end goal health and fitness-wise that I would need to put the extra in and there could come a time when using a product such as a fat burner or other associated aids might be appropriate for me.
So there you are, my task today was to dispel a myth and in this case it is the misunderstanding about health and sport nutrition supplements.
