My Blasted Energy Bill

I am with EON and currently pay £220 a month for dual fuel gas and electricity.

Yes. TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY POUNDS A MONTH. Better still that rather stinging payment isn’t covering our monthly consumption apparently and I expect it to hike up in the next few months.

Another thrilling read hits the inbox

I live in a three bedroom terraced house. It is a fairly large house but has a new-ish boiler which is maintained yearly and we are as frugal as possible with our energy.

I am on the cheapest tariff (fixed) available to me and have maximised all discounts to go towards my bill rather than Tesco vouchers etc.

We have a tumble dryer (yes I know it eats electricity but I’ve always had one and we use when needed).

We have lots and lots of lights, 40 spotlights embedded into the ceiling and in the lounge and dining room we have drop down lights which take candle bulbs. I have replace the candle bulbs with LED varieties and am slowly changing over the other spotlights (or in some cases stubbornly refusing to replace a bulb when it runs out).

We are very frugal when it comes to light and heat, or as frugal as possible and I take steps where possible to reduce my bill.

Still my bill is through the roof. We are insulated etc and fairly savvy with the old being green and saving energy lifestyle so what is the plan? Surely we won’t always be paying this horrendous amount? Gawd forbid it keeps rising?

Does anyone else have such a ridiculous bill for a similar sized property? I’m waiting on specific usage information from EON to do a comparison with other companies but would be interested to hear what other people pay / their energy bill experiences are.

*The tumble dryer stays.

  1. That does seem an awful lot. I’ve managed to cut my bill a lot in the past 18 months .. but it has taken effort. Plus there’s only 2 of us here. I think I pay about £100 per month for both. (And I also just got a £170 rebate. Sorry!) Oh and we don’t have a tumble dryer! I’m with M&S Energy .. might be worth talking to them?

    1. I saw your rebate, spat on the floor and wrote this post 🙂
I will be looking at M&S and anyone else I think can save me pennies.
There are four of us and I work from home full time so there is always someone in which makes a difference.

  2. That seems so expensive! We live in a 3 bedroomed terrace too and my last bills were £190 for electric & £95 for gas and that was for 3 months from British Gas!
    I’d say change supplier!!

  3. good grief!! we pay £114 a month for both of ours, live in a 3 bedroom semi. use a tumble dryer A LOT, and have loads of stuff charging all the time! usually 2 tv’s on, loo light on all night for 6 yr old and lots of old fashioned light bulbs. i would change suppliers asap!!!

  4. Ours was £190 for dual fuel and due to go up further with the latest price hike (3 bed detached house, insulation as good as we can get it but some way off perfect, double glazing, new-ish boiler). So I shopped around for a new supplier using Money Saving Expert and if the quote was right it should be under £150 now. And we’ve replaced the energy guzzling spotlight bulbs (50w each) with LED bulbs (5w each) so that should make a difference too.

  5. 4 bed detached and I pay £70 gas and £35 electricity. That’s on a dual fuel DD. I think mine is bad enough!

  6. I would be querying whether your meters are working correctly in the first place. That said, I haven’t had a chance to check our bills or meters for a while. I must do that! Good luck

  7. Ouch, good luck with getting it down.

I have finally started to see a difference in my energy bills, they were stressing me out at £185 a month with British Gas and this was months after having a new boiler fitted which set us back a chunk of savings.

I switched to Utility Warehouse and my bill went down straight away to around £115 for duel fuel, I was still convinced it should be lower as we have spent more than a month out of the country in recent months for starters and I have been so conscious of trying to save money. It turned out I was £372 in credit, so that is quite a saving with the £70 a month as well. I know that Utility Warehouse is seen as a controversial company by some.

My washer dryer broke earlier this year and I have replaced it with just a washer, again to save money, but my children are much older so it’s not missed as much as it would be with younger ones.

Anyway after all that rambling, I’m wondering if you may have a similar situation to mine where for some reason the savings anticipated because of a newish boiler haven’t materialised yet — and they may do

I hope you can get a good comparison and find a lower price as soon as you are able to get out of your current contract.
