Winter is Coming: Prepare Your Home for the Cold

The gap between now and winter is quickly depleting, and it seems as if Christmas is only around the corner. Therefore, you need to ensure your home is properly winter-proofed, so no hidden nuisances can rear their ugly heads and cause havoc to your family home. Although maintenance and general upkeep seems like a chore, it is, however, incredibly important. A faulty plumbing issue caused by too-cold weather can turn a family’s life upside down, and an untended pathway can cause accidents. Here’s how to ensure your home is ready for winter.

Get Your Heating Checked

With plummeting weather, you don’t want to run the risk of experiencing a temperamental heating system. Instead, you want to ensure your home is kept pleasantly warm. Therefore, test your boiler by turning on your heating and keep tabs on the radiators in your home. Take note of any that aren’t emitting a lot of heat, and call in a professional to check your boiler if a problem appears. Another means of checking your home’s heating is by bleeding the radiators. You don’t want to leave your central heating to chance.

Clear the Gutters and Drains

You won’t want to spend too much time maintaining the outside of the house during winter, so this is the most ideal time to ensure your gutters and drains are taken care of before it becomes too cold outside. By leaving the gutters and drains for lengthy amounts of time, you’re running the risks of leaves and other bits of debris causing leaks that can appear in your roof and walls.

Check Your Plumbing

Prevent your pipes from freezing, and find a plumber online. Have them inspect your pipes; you may find out that your plumbing is currently unprotected, and that you need to invest in lagging (a foam layer) to stop them from freezing and bursting. You should also check if there is any vegetation, and remove any.

Improve Your Insulation

Roughly, a quarter of your home’s heat is lost through the roof, and many homes leave this room unattended Winter is comingand unthought-of, and many rooms of certain houses, especially those that are older, don’t have cavity wall insulation or double glazing, though many people wish to keep the integrity of their older architecture.  Proper insulation is not only smart but vital to keeping your family comfortably warm. Nowadays, triple glazing is the new double glazing, and if you’re worried about cost, the government can provide schemes and grants.

Inspect the Chimney

Having a chimney in your home adds a wealth of character, however, it can also add an uncomfortable draught. Make sure your chimney is well-kept. Sweep it often, especially if you use it during the winter months. If you don’t use your chimney, and it’s purely decoration, keep hot air inside and cold air outside by shoving a pillow inside it, or by using a chimney balloon. If you’re worried about damp, the chimney balloon leaves a small amount of ventilation to counter this issue.

Itty Bittys From Hallmark: Fun for Play and Collecting

I’ve been a Mum for over eleven years now and have seen many popular toys and games, crazes and fad come and go. Imagine my glee then when I was introduced to the Itty Bittys from Hallmark. These are not only brilliant as standalone toys but make great autumn/rainy day fun prompts and are fabulous for collecting too.

Taylor was sent six of these fab fun characters and we have had a great time with them as they may be used in so many ways.

Companions

itty bittysBeing slightly more grown-up than Taylor I’d be tempted to have the Itty Bittys as display items but then he’s 6yrs old and I’m….not. I have Funko Pop figures of my own to play with but these smaller, cuter versions of favourite Star Wars, Marvel, DC Comics and SuperHero Girls are perfect in size and style for younger children to have as favourite companions. Taylor has had a different Itty Bitty for a bedtime mini teddy (or a teddy for his teddy) every night. He’s also had one in his pocket when going for an autumn foraging adventure. These make awesome companions.

Hide and Seek

Cute and fun, Itty Bittys are great for playing games with. Our favourite is hide and seek when we take turns in hiding the characters in Taylor’s room for the other one to find. There was that one time I thought I’d be clever and hide Robin in Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine toy and forgot all about him but Batman came to the rescue eventually and set him free.

Roleplay Toys

I’ve come across Taylor simply playing with the Itty Bittys. Yoda has been kidnapped and so the rest of the gang, led by a distraught Chewie has battled evil to find him and set him free. There’s really nothing better than watching your children come up with their own scenarios and act them out.

Missiles

These Itty Bittys are soft and fast. You can play catch with them. You can make them fly. You get the picture.

Itty Bittys as Collectables

We have six of these fab Itty Bittys and they are very much loved. We have to have more! There are so many to collect and Taylor has asked if he can use his pocket money to get some more. Who am I to refuse? These Itty Bitty things are nothing short of awesome.

From a parent’s point of view, I love these Itty Bittys. They are very well made, look great and have offered us hours of fun so far. If you’re looking for stocking fillers, collectables or just some awesome gifts for your little ones these Itty Bittys fit the bill perfectly.
