Getting my veggies delivered is something I’ve been wanting to do for years. I just didn’t get around to it (just call me the Queen of Procrastination). There has been a lot of talk of home grown food and autumn soups on Twitter recently and seeing as the only thing I can grow are weeds I figured it was time to look into it.
As a veg box virgin the first thing I did was my research. I bypassed Google and went to the font of all knowledge, Twitter. By and large the positive comments far outweighed the negatives for having a box delivered and Riverford seemed well known and respected so to the Riverford website I went.
Β The site is very easy to navigate and by entering my postcode I could see where my local delivery came from, who would bring it and most importantly, what was in each box!
Riverford offer a range of seasonal boxes of different sizes and with different contents. Being new to the veg box game I ordered a small vegetable box.
This is what was delivered:
I have to say that the pic doesn’t do the box justice but needless to say I was very impressed.
As this was my first delivery, the friendly delivery man brought me a starter pack and explained how it all worked. Is it sad to say I was very excited? Probably, but not needlessly, the quality of the veg we received was outstanding!
Will we be ordering again? I already have, this time I’ve made my own box up rather than going for a set one, (I like to try everything out and see what works best for us) and I’m looking forward to the next delivery.
Would we as a family recommend Riverford? Absolutely! Expect to see some healthy and hopefully yummy autumn & winter recipes using our box contents soon.
** I haven’t been contacted by Riverford and asked to review. These are our findings as a family after venturing in to veg box world for the first time π
I LOVE Riverford. I remember how amazed we were after their first delivery; the potatoes tasted so… potatoey! (And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, get yourself an organic veg box pdq!
Funny enough Roy said that, I think we’d forgotten how veg (minus the crap) actually tasted.
Riverford is very popular in our family, especially at Christmas. The veg actually lasts over the festive period. It saves mad dashes to the supermarket for more sprouts because the ones you bought 2 days ago have gone off already!
They are certainly fresh aren’t they! We’ve only had one box so far but I can imagine how nice our Xmas will be π
I keep looking at veg boxes and wondering if I can justify it – how does the cost compare to what you’d spend on supermarket veg??
This is part of the reason I put getting one off. Piece for piece a supermarket is cheaper but 1) Riverford is much nicer and last longer and 2) We waste much less, we only use what we want for each meal, no cooking extra “To use up” before it goes off, then throwing it and 3) we are eating more veg because it’s there and looking at us and also eating less crap! I am adding veggies to lunchboxes in pastry-less quiches and pasta.
I’d say give it a go, you don’t have to set up a regular order, just try a one off and see how you get on.
sounds lovely I used to love our boxes – might have to relook into it x
The only think that’s annoyed me is how long I’ve waited before actually getting my bum in gear and ordering π
Ooh vegetables with real mud on them! IN reply to Potty Mummy, when I first came to Israel 30 years ago I suddenly understood why ketchup tastes like it doea – because that’s what real toamatoes taste like (minus the sugar and vinegar of course). Sadly Israel has gone the way of the global supermarket and our tomatoes also are tasteless. we do have these organic boxes as well though.
I’d be wary of 1. not getting around to cooking up the leftovers each week into a soup (eg) and being left with piles of rotting veg in the fridge even as the next box arrives. Or 2. cooking up a storm so that I end up with 100 jars of soup in the freezer with more waiting to go in – and we nver eat it because I keep forgetting to take it out. Or, ironically end up eating defrosted when the fresh stuff is waiting to be cooked.
These boxes require a self-discipline that I just don’t think I have…yet.
Luckily I’m a meal-planner so EVERYTHING gets devoured! No rotting veggies here or mountains of soup π
I’m glad you commented actually, I need your help. You had a recipe on your blog and I can’t find it now? It was potato based, they looked like round patties or something. Does that sound right?
Might just have a go too!
I’m very glad I have. You don’t NEED to have a box every week and can chop and change to suit yourself. Let me know if do though, I’ll be curious to see what you think!
