5 AUTUMN RECIPES YOUR KIDS WILL LOVE

autumn

When the autumn season rolls around, many people get the urge to bake and try a variety of new recipes. From warming recipes, to those that use the most beloved spices and flavours of the season, there are a lot of ways to create really satisfying dishes. But if you want to start incorporating recipes that your kids are sure to love, check out the five ideas below.

1. Brownie Bites

Who doesn’t love some warm brownies on a cool autumn day? Your kids are sure to delight in this treat, but rather than using any icing on your dessert, add some protein by using almond butter as the brownie topping instead. Whether you make the brownies homemade or from a box doesn’t matter, but consider cutting them into bites to keep portions small.

2. Apple Cider Doughnuts

Doughnuts are a sweet treat for the fall as well, so making your own apple cider doughnuts right at home is a great way to please your child’s sweet tooth while making something together that you can both indulge in. Warm up some apple cider on the stove to infuse your kitchen with the rich scents of autumn as you prepare your doughnut recipe, and then pop the doughnuts in the oven rather than frying them in order to make this treat healthier.

3. Caramel Covered Apples

Chocolate covered apples are great, but caramel covered apples are even better. If you have gone apple picking this autumn, use the extra apples after you create a warm, rich caramel sauce that you can dip the apples into. This easy treat can be made in just minutes and all you really need is some sticks that you can use to hold your apples as you dip them into the hot caramel. Let the caramel cool before you indulge.

4. Cranberry Cupcakes

When you want to make cupcakes in the fall, why not spice them up with some cranberry to infuse them with the flavours of the season? All you have to do is make regular vanilla cupcakes and then fill them with a delicious cranberry sauce made from fresh cranberries, brown and granulated sugar, apple cider, and cinnamon. Once you bite into these cupcakes, you will have a deliciously sweet surprise waiting.

5. Apple Pie

Your kids may not really be big fans of pumpkin pie, but it is really likely that they will love a warm and sweet apple pie. Again, if you went apple picking this year, use those apples to work with your kids on making a delicious pie crust and filling that will be the perfect dessert. You might even want to enjoy a slice for breakfast before heading off to take your kids to school.

These are just a few of the many autumn recipes that you can enjoy as you take in all that this season has to offer, and you can enjoy every one of these delicious treats with your kids, who are sure to love them as well.

Venice Foodie Tours To Make Your Mouth Water

Did you know that I’m something of a closet foodie? No? Then perhaps I need to advertise the fact more as to be honest I love spending time in the kitchen, creating, experimenting and putting together meals for my family.

Thankfully Roy and the boys are all fairly adventurous when it comes to food and so are willing to try pretty much anything which in turn gives me a free rein when it comes to concocting new recipes.

For me half of the fun is creating something new from scratch while discovering new ingredients. While we’re somewhat limited here in rural Thirsk with regards shopping choices (we have Tesco, Lidl, a Co-op and a smattering of the usual butchers and greengrocers in town) we do have a weekly market, some of which have a foodie slant and a new monthly farmer’s market with producers and growers bringing new and interesting flavours from all over Yorkshire.

What I’d really like to see more of however are more authentic foods from abroad. I stumbled across the name Emilia Delizia recently and was blown away by the food-related tours and treats the company offers. I could for example visit Venice and be taken on an in-depth tour of local eateries and producers, visiting local recommended tapas style bars ( which I believe are called Bacarl) in order to sink my teeth into some chicchetti which are the renowned Venetian tapas.

Indeed given how much I love to cook and how much Roy loves to sample my creations I could see a foodie tour such as this being something we could very much enjoy together. As well as the obvious food aspect of the tour there is the historical aspect of both the city and the background behind the foods and drinks we’d no doubt be introduced to.

Being not very well travelled at all (as in I don’t actually nor have I ever owned a passport) I can honestly say that I expect my perception of authentic fare, impressions gleaned from hours in the supermarket and at the markets is really quite removed from what I’d see abroad. A culinary tour of Venice, or indeed a series of tours around a number of European countries sounds amazing and is certainly something I’ve added to my “Don’t leave it too long” bucket list. Outside of Venice I’d love to do something more fish-related. I love fish however I’m not terribly inventive when it comes to new fish-related dishes, particularly shellfish.kj  Something else for me to think about?

What about you? Does an authentic foodie tour of Venice or indeed anywhere sound good to you? What one foodie city would you like to visit, what one European dish would you like to learn to cook properly?
